I'm running a Windows 7 VM that is stored on a dedicated USB SSD.
When I run this VM from my laptop, it seems to run just fine. But when I run it from my desktop, the performance is terrible and the SSD shows 100% activity time for something like the first 10 minutes of launching the VM.
My desktop has 32GB RAM. I'm allocating 8GB (also tried 16GB) to the VM. I'm giving the VM 60GB disk space. And I'm giving the VM half of my 8 virtual cores. CPU, memory and everything else show very little activity. But the SSD is at 100%. I also tried running the VM on my local drive and the results were the same.
It seems like after 15 or 20 minutes that the disk activity subsides somewhat and performance improves.
Can anyone point me in a direction that might help me resolve this? I'm not a VM expert. I'm using VMWare player with default settings where possible.
(Although after having typed this, I see the VM drive (SSD) is back up to continuous 100% activity even as I'm not doing anything in the VM.)
