Hi there,
New to VMWare Player. I have used that other brand for a while but the VMWare converter struck me as something I could use to help older folks out migrating to Windows 8.1 (mainly because 8.1 makes it very difficult to get data etc off Vista machines onto the new machine).
My first customer to try this on had a Compaq laptop with a dead motherboard, and has replaced it with a new Acer rather than paying to repair the board.
I placed his HDD into a HP machine to run the converter, and some hours later had a working VM. I copied that into his new machine and installed VMPlayer (6.0.3), and then ran the VM.
It all runs fine except that I cannot get the network to work - drivers aren't loading.
Of course I have installed the VMWare Tools onto the VM. And uninstalled. And reinstalled. And repaired.
Vista sees the network cards, but cannot get drivers for them. All other drivers went in but not the appropriate ones.
Shared folders between host and guest work properly as best as I can tell - some read only ones and one read/write.
I have tried disabling AV and firewall, and doing a clean startup (ie no 3rd party programs or services except those from VMWare), and other such tricks with no luck. Have tried "updating" with a USB-Wifi fitted to the machine, tried installing over lan, tried pointing the installer to the VMware tools "disk". All failed.
I have been trying with this for some days. I would like to be able to use VMWare as the converter makes turning their old computer into a VM quite easy, but if the networking won't work then I will be forced to use something else.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Much thanks,
David
