Vmware player 6.03 & Windows 8.1 network mapped drives keep reconnecting and are slow - how do I make it solid and fast?

I've been searching for some answers for quite a while and nothing has worked, so I'll ask here.

I have a surface pro 3 and I installed vmware player 6.03 on it. I have a virtual machine from my windows 7 machine that I copied over (and vmware player appeared to understand this, it works as it should.)

When I map a network drive it acts normally for a few moments. If I have the folder view open in windows 8.1, I can jump around the file tree without any problem. Then without warning, the green bar appears at the top of the folder view and the network drive is not available in windows explorer or other file managers like total commander.

This happens so often that the network drive is unusable on the windows 8.1 machine. On the windows 7 machine the network drives from the vmplayer respond super fast, no delays, no reconnecting.

Is there something I should do in the windows 8.1 virtual machine (ubuntu), some settings I need to change to get it to work without constantly disconnecting?  Maybe there's something I missed when copying the virtual machine over. I'm not all that experienced with ubuntu or virtual machines or windows networking, I just read enough tutorials to get it all to do what I want, but I'm stuck with this network drive disconnect problem.

Any ideas will be appreciated, thanks.

Scot
