Trying to determine which VMWare is best to use/buy

Question is 2-sided for me...trying to get and use a product without added hassle of choosing wrong product to start with.

So part 1 is i got a darn good laptop that i want to use in conjunction with my Army Instruction and deployments but being Windows 8.1 i have a hard time with CAC and AKO issues due to OS and browser.  So i figured being able to use a VM on said laptop i could run win7, inside of win8.1, and tailor the browser to something that would allow me to log in with no CAC issues. Part 2 is i would learn about VM and then be able to study up on certifications enhancing my IT profession.

Question is which one do i need?  Player? Player Pro? Workstation? Fusion? Am i able to do what i am asking about with this virtual machine? Hoping that posting here is the right area and way to get str8 answers.

Thanks much,

External hard drive on Windows 7 VM: Difference between VMware Player 6.0.5 and 7.0.0?

$

I have a laptop and a desktop, both running Kubuntu.  Each has a Windows 7 vm guest.  When I plug an external hard drive (Seagate into the laptop, both the Linux machine and the vm can see it (not at the same moment, obviously).  When I plug the same drive into the desktop, the vm sort of sees it and sort of doesn't.  That is, the device shows up in the "Virtual Machine" menu list of "Removable Devices," but the Windows installation cannot seem to assign it a drive letter or use it.  The message I get is that the USB device I've plugged in isn't recognized and that I should try reconnecting it or "replace the device."  Reconnecting it does nothing, and since the other Windows vm can see it and work with it, I'm disinclined to replace the device.

I have checked the two vms' settings against each other, and they are identical.  The only difference I can see is that the laptop is running VMware Player 6.0.5, and the desktop is running 7.0.0.  Could that possibly explain the difficulty?  I can always roll back to the earlier version, but it seems pointless to do that without knowing that the difference in versions is at least a candidate.

Thanks in advance for the help.

advice on first VMWare certification for a beginner.

I'm looking to get my first vmware certification. Something that will not take to long so I can get motivated to keep going on to other certifications.

My experience with vmware is building servers via vcenter, using templates to build servers, have built esix hosts, created esxi clusters, vmotion knowledge.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

VMWare Player 7 Constantly Freezing and Unusable

Clean install of 64-bit Windows 10 Technical Preview (build 9926) on WMWare Player 7.0.0 build-2305329. No third-party software at all except for VMWare Tools.

Host is 64-bit Windows 8.1 Update 1 with 12 GB RAM and up-to-date AMD video driver.

VMWare Player freezes constantly for about 30 seconds at a time. Can happen at any time and happens frequently enough that VMWare Player is pretty much unusable.

VM has 1 CPU core, 4 GB memory, 40 GB virtual disk. EDIT: Currently 10.3 GB used of 39.6 GB available.

Any way to prevent VMWare Player from constantly freezing? It's effectively unusable as is.

Hi,

I'm unable to upgrade on Player 7.1. After downloading, I get a window where I should uninstall Version 7.0 but when starting the msi-packet the System crashes. I tried to uninstall manually but no luck. I'm using Microsoft Surface 3 pro with Windows 8.1

Any ideas to solve the Problem?

Thanks in advance Jürgen.

Hi team,   Is VMware Player 7.1.0 available for 32 bit Windows 7 ?

Configure automatic bridging in Player 7 installed on Debian/GNU Linux 7

$

Hello everybody,

I'd like to run Player 7 on a host running Debian GNU/Linux 7. This host has two hardware NICs. The VM is configured to use a virtual NIC, that is bridged. Unfortunately the automatic bridging of Player 7 seems to make some trouble in my scenario. I think I have to specify one NIC explicitly and exclude the other one to be used in automatic bridging.

Player 7 running on Windows 7 offers an option to achieve this. Under "Virtual Machines -> Network adapter -> Configure Adapters" a list of NICs physically installed in the host is available. I can check or uncheck certain adapters to be part of the automatic bridging.

Running Player 7 on Debian/GNU Linux 7 I don 't have this configuration option. There, the button "Configure Adapters" is completely missing in the Player GUI.

Does anybody know an alternative to limit bridging to a specific NIC in Player 7 on Debian GNU/Linux 7?

In case you 're interested in why I'm looking for this configuration option, the following additional notes on my scenario may be helpful: NIC "eth0" is connected to an ethernet switch, which connects some more machines. If only "eth0" is connected / plugged in, everything works as expected: VM can reach the machines on LAN and vice versa. NIC "eth1" provides an internet connection.

As soon as "eth1" is connected / plugged in, the following logs are visible with "dmesg":

[11096.648225] e1000e: eth1 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: Rx/Tx

[11096.649449] device eth0 left promiscuous mode

[11096.649458] bridge-eth0: disabled promiscuous mode

[11096.649463] bridge-eth0: disabling the bridge on dev down

[11096.649617] bridge-eth0: down

[11096.649623] bridge-eth0: detached

[11096.649652] /dev/vmnet: open called by PID 3298 (vmnet-bridge)

[11096.649664] /dev/vmnet: port on hub 0 successfully opened

[11096.649673] bridge-eth1: up

[11096.649675] bridge-eth1: attached

[11096.649679] device eth1 entered promiscuous mode

[11096.649692] bridge-eth1: enabled promiscuous mode

[11096.849083] userif-4: sent link down event.

[11096.849087] userif-4: sent link up event.

After that, there is no communication possible from host to VM and no communication possible from LAN to VM and vice versa . Plugging out the cable of "eth1" makes the connections to and from VM work again.

Greetings,

Stefan

Crash after left running for extended periods of time or sleeping

Hello,

I am running several vms (not all at once), but they all seem to crash for some reason after running for a (sometimes short) period of time.

I get the following error:

VMware Player unrecoverable error: (vthread-9)

NOT_IMPLEMENTED d:/build/ob/bora-2305329/bora/lib/pollDefault/pollDefault.c:3890

"C:\Users\Sam\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware-Sam\vmware-vmplayer-13448.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware technical support, run "vm-support".

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

Here is the log file Player generated as a result of the crash:

http://pastebin.com/ZVNMa8Ph

After these crashes, if I try to access the vm that crashed, I get another set of errors:

This virtual machine appears to be in use.

If this virtual machine is not in use, press the "Take Ownership" button to obtain ownership of it. Otherwise, press the "Cancel" button to avoid damaging it.

Configuration file: C:\Users\Sam\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu 64-bit\Ubuntu 64-bit.vmx.

and

Error while opening the virtual machine: Taking ownership of this virtual machine failed.

The virtual machine is in use by an application on your host computer.

Configuration file: C:\Users\Sam\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu 64-bit\Ubuntu 64-bit.vmx.

The error is not specific to vm OS, I have both Windows (Win10) and Linux (Ubuntu 14.10, Arch) vms.

Does anyone know what causes this crash, or perhaps what I can do to prevent it?

Thanks in advance!

Failed to initialize library for mounting and unmounting virtual disks workstation 9

I am using VMware Workstation 9.0.4 build-1945795 and having an issue with "Map Virtual Disks". I have tried to map a virtual disk on windows server 2008 r2, windows server 2008, windows 7, windows xp,windows 2000, windows 98 and DOS 6.22. I have went to File - Map Virtual Disks and get "Failed to initialize library for mounting and unmounting virtual disks" everytime I try to map no matter what OS for virtual machine. Some have snapshot while others do not this is a mix of 64 bit and 32 bit virtual machines. My system is Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. What am I missing here because if there is a feature available on the menu you would seem to expect it to actually work on something.

VMWare Player 7.1 I/O warning message

Hi,

VMWare Player 7.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit works fine for me but when running vmplayer from a terminal I always get the warning:

I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/etc/vmware/hostd/proxy.xml"

If I look in /etc/vmware there is no hostd directory. I already tried a complete uninstall/install of VMWare Player but I'm still getting this warning.

Does anyone have a clue?

BSOD 0x7B on new VM (NOT a conversion)

$

I used VMware Player (v7.0.0 build-2305329) running on Linux Mint 17.1 to create a new VM.  I used ISO images of the recovery CDs that came with my laptop (the one that's now running Linux Mint) to install WinXP Pro on the VM.  I've done this before with success, both with VMware player and VirtualBox, but I've lost those VM files.  I'm getting BSOD 0x7B (attached).  I have a vague memory of having something weird like this a long time ago and having to edit the vmx file so the HDD was SCSI instead of IDE.  Indeed, I've found several threads from folks who have a similar problem after converting a running computer.  Their fixes didn't work here.

I have attached the original vmx file (with ".bak" appended to the extension) and the "corrected" one here.  The system behaves the same way with either file.

What should I try next?

Thanks.

Hyper-V compatibility windows8.1

Hi all, I have got a VMware vhd that I try to run on my win8.1 and when I try to run this vhd I get this error:

VMware Player and Hyper-V are not compatible. Remove the Hyper-V role from the system before running VMware Player.

The solution I found was to add a boot loader, one for hyper-v and one for VMware:

1. bcdedit /copy "{current}" /d "Hyper-V"

2. bcdedit /set "{current}" hypervisorlaunchtype off

But after reboot I still get same error.

What am I doing wrong? and how do I see which one is active?

My bcdedit shows this now:

Player 7.0.0: how to preserve full screen mode between sessions?

$

Hi,

I have Windows 7 x64 with 2 monitors. I used to run virtual machines in full screen mode. I expect that Player restores full screen mode when restarting suspended machine. This works with Player 6 but version 7 always starts machines in windowed mode, with big widow which covers full screen of a single monitor. When I click at "full screen" icon, Player goes full screen, but virtual machine screen is not resized, I only get black border around VM display. To get true full screen I have to minimize window, maximize and then click full screen icon.

Is there any remedy for this behavior?

"VMware DHCP Service" will not start. Why?

$

Hello,

I have a Linux guest OS running in VMware Player.  When the guest OS starts, it tries to PXE-boot from the VMware DHCP server.  The guest OS never receives a response and times out with the message No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received.  This leads me to believe that the VMware DHCP service is not working.

On the Host Windows 7 machine, I see that the WMware DHCP Service service has a Startup Type of Automatic.  However, that service is not running.  When I manually start it, Windows shows a dialog box indicating that the service is starting, but then it quits after a few seconds and Windows displays a dialog that says The VMWare DHCP Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.  What other service or program needs to be running?  VMware Player is running.  The VMware NAT Service is running.  What am I missing?

Details:

  • VMware Player 6.0.3
  • Host OS is Windows 7 Enterprise

Thanks for any help that you can provide,

-- Steve
