Workstation nesting under Hyper-V

$

Hi Team

I am trying to get VMWare Workstation Player working under Hyper-V. I am getting the error "VMware Workstation and Hyper-V are not compatible. Remove the Hyper-V role from the system before running VMware Workstation."

Before you say it. The Hyper-V role is not installed, this system is a guest OS of a hyper-v host.

Yes this error is because it detects the underlying hyper-v host and the error is because it thinks the underlying host does not support nesting. This is no longer correct* under Hyper-V 2016.

If it is now exposing the right functions of the processor to the guest, once you run the powershell command to allow nesting in the guest, than surely this should work fine?

* Yes the microsoft article says third party virtualization tech not support but they should work if enabled to work and not just "detect Hyper-V and error".

I am trying to get GNS3 working with VM support.

Not sure what virtualization technology is commonly used in linux-based VPS hosts but it definitely is not vmware. Still would like vmware workstation to run in such a VPS in order to use the freebsd o/s on it. Can this be done? How?

I updated VMware workstation the other day and now when I try to boot my virtual machine, it freezes during the loading phase (host is Windows 10). I've attached an image of the screen I get if I try to boot the VM.

So far I've tried restarting the computer and reinstalling VMware Workstation.

Any help is much appreciated, all my work is on this VM.

I have a game that is only playable through Windows XP, and have one computer that has Windows XP, so I am using a Windows XP virtual machine to play the game.  The only problem is that I need to connect them using a LAN cable but the virtual machine won't see the regular computer.  Can anyone help?

Restoring backups from machines with uefi instead of BIOS

Hi all,

I've just downloaded the free version of VMWare Workstation 12 Player to have a bit of a play around and I tried to restore a recent backup of Server 2008 R2 but it failed because the backup was created on a uefi based machine, and the VM is bios based. I can't seem to find where to change that in the VM settings. Any idea what I can do to sort this?

Thanks in advance,

Mac.

Cannot connect the virtual device sata0:1

Cannot connect the virtual device sata0:1 because no corresponding device is available on the host.  The error pops up when I enable the host/guest share and map the drive.

I tried to delete and then add back the the sata drive to VM Player- but it did not help. I have installed VMware Tools.

And the enable/disable share functionality has got disbaled - I can not edit/undo it. (but the share is still enabled)

I am using VM Player 12.5.5 on Win10 Pro Host, and Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop.

Thanks

Power on Error - Virtual Machine needs authorization.

Hi:

My first time here and first time using VMware. I have Windows 8.1 host and installed Ubuntu 16.04.2 guest into VMware  12.5.5. I followed the Easy set-up. All went well until I clicked "Power on". I waited a while and finally appeared  an error box saying:

Error while powering on: VMware Player cannot connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program, access all directories the program uses, and access all directories for temporary files.

The VMware Authorization Service is not running.

Error while powering on: VMware Player cannot connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program, access all directories the program uses, and access all directories for temporary files.

I searched the problem. I went to Services.msc and Started VM authorization. Restarted compu.  Tried to Power on again and same error box appeared. I went back to Services.msc and "started" everything beginning with letters VM. There were 4 entries. All were "running". Tried to power on again. Still got the same error.

Thinning virtual machine with Ubuntu 64 bit

Hi there,

according to Ubuntus "Disk Usage Analyzer" (baobab) 20,7GB of 76GB are in use at the moment (see attachments) but the VMware directory somehow is around 79 GB.

I already tried the disk utilities "Defragment" and "Compact" but sadly with no success.

Any ideas how to shrink the used disk space of the VM?

Setup:

VMware Workstation 12 Player V12.1.0 buid-3272444

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit with 76 GB disk space

Thanks in advance!

I installed VMware-Player-12.5.5-5234757.x86_64.bundle as per the instruction found here. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware

When i run the command vmplayer it doesnt do anything and there is no error shown in the terminal. I checked the log file found in /tmp/vmware-userID/vmware-apploader log. You can see it here. Pastebin.com

I have tried the solution to this problem found here but it did not help https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware#vmware_12_process_terminates_immediately_after_start.2C_no_GUI_is_launched

I also tried recompiling all of the modules with this command vmware-modconfig --console --install-all but that didnt help either.

i Have verified that all of the services are running. I am also running the latest release of Arch Linux.

VM XP image slow - Solved

I had built my sister-in-law an XP PC which now had a fan that failed. I had built a newer PC with Windows 7 64 bit on it and gave it to her.

She wanted addresses that were in CreataCard Gold 3 which would not run on Windows 7 64 bit due to it using a 16 bit installer.

I brought the hard drive back and ran DISK2VHD and then ran STARWIND V2V and created a VMDK file.

I brought it up under VMWare on an old PC that doesn't support VT to test getting it bootable. It ran somewhat slow.

I got the addresses she wanted off of it.

I then wanted to move it to my main Core I5 PC running Windows 7 to save it in case she wanted something else off of it later..

That is when it got really super slow. I found turning off VT helped some since it wasn't as slow on the older PC.

I found a discussion about Avast and AVG needing to turn off the VT setting in those products.

It was so slow I never could get into the Avast settings to change it. I ended up just uninstalling it. That helped a little but not much.

I noticed the CPU was running 100% with most of the CPU in Taskmgr.  I then found a discussion about 100% CPU.

It said to go into the device manager and expand the Computer and start the driver update to change it from ACPI.

Then select - No not this time. Then select - Install from a list or specific location. Select - Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.

Select - Standard PC. It will have you reboot the image. After the reboot, it installed a bunch of different drivers.

Not sure if this would affect activation. I had a Windows XP Pro Retail I had used for the older PC I had built for her.

I had no issue with activation. It may have been because of the Retail license.

It runs a lot better now.  One change at shutdown that is different now. It says the CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system.

Power off or reset the virtual machine. When you x out of that it says it is now safe to turn off your computer.

I then select Player at the top  Then - Power.  Then Next  - Shut Down Guest.

This isn't the original discussion I found but mentions the procedure.

How to route all audio from guest to host

I have a Windows 10 host running a Windows 7 guest on VMware Workstation 12 Player. The guest

I'm trying to figure out how I can route all the audio from the guest VM to the host as if it's the VMware player process on the host simply outputting audio like any other program. Note that I have some limitations that prevent me from considering the use of networked connection means such as VNC or RDP. Any idea how I could do this?

Hi,

I did a physical to virtual of my Linux Ubuntu 17.04 and have come across a couple of stumbling blocks

which I hope you very bright people out there can help problem solve.  I'm using workstation 12 player latest.

First off was the Vmware tools wouldn't install properly and gave a message - "  systemctl status vmware tools service and journalctl -xe unable to start services vmware-tools.service failed because the control process exited with error code"

I tried to - sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop -y

Which seems to install but on reboot the desktop window only scales a tiny bit in a 4:3 ratio, and now I also get a error message  "poweron script failed"

Kinda new to Vmware,  did some googling but info is a bit scant when it come to my situation.. Don't know what to do really?

Please help kind people if you can.

Many thanks!

Linux Host/Windows 10 Pro 64 Guest - Bad Audio?

Hi,

Host: Linux Mint 18.1 MATE 64Bit / Guest: Windows 10 Pro 64Bit

I've been using VMWare Player for many years on Linux hosts with no problems.

I recently updated Linux VMWare Player and now have a problem:

In my Windows 10 Pro 64Bit guest I have bad audio?

When a sound is played in Win 10 virtual machine the sound is heavily distorted?

I do have current VMWare Tools for Windows installed.

This issue happened recently after updating Linux VMWare Player.

Any help in fixing this problem would be appreciated, thank you!

VMWare Player (+ Server + Workstation) - USB SmartCard Reader communication problems

$

In testing under a Linux VM I've come across a VERY reproduceable problem with using SmartCards (in particular PIV).

  • Readers that can return a list of their speeds will fail before even getting to see a card

  • When reading data from a PIV (particularly large data objects using extended APDU), the usb layer will fail

Both of these errors state that the USB device suddenly became unavailable and recovery may or may not occur.

Attached is sample code that will compile under Linux w/ GCC if you have the pcsc-lite development libraries.

Affected VMWare hosts:

  • Windows XP

  • Linux

  • Mac OSX

  • Windows Vista (VMWare Player 2.5)

Affected Linux guests:

  • Distros tested: Gentoo, Ubuntu, Fedora

  • PC/SC Lite version independent

  • Multiple kernels under one distro tested

  • Both bleeding-edge and stable libusb tested

Known Affected VMWare Software:

  • VMWare Player 2 and 2.5

  • VMWare Workstation 6

  • VMWare Server

This is not using the Virtual SmartCard layer that passes an emulated CCID device to the OS (which doesn't work in Linux, even with the vendor/product added to PC/SC).

Readers tested:

  • SCR3310

  • CryptoCard - SCR331

  • Gemplus PinPad - Fails during reader detection

  • GemTwin - Fails during reader detection

Many PIV vendors' cards were tested...

Compile test tool w/ command like:

gcc -o pcsc_get_data -I /usr/include/PCSC -lpcsclite pcsc_get_data.c
./pcsc_get_data

The utility will use the first reader, wait til a card is inserted (or use already-inserted), select the PIV applet, read the PIV Auth cert off of it.

Expanding a partition in Ubuntu

Hello all,

I have a Ubuntu guest installed in Workstation Player 12, and I use it to study Hadoop and Spark applications. Unfortunately, I only allocated 20GB to it initially and I've run out of space. To correct this, I went to "Edit," "Hard Disk," and "Expand," giving it a total of 60GB instead.

However, I need to increase the partition from within Ubuntu and this is where the whole cascade of problems started to occur. After doing a search, it seemed that the best thing to do was to used the Gnome Partition Editor aka "gparted." However, this proved problematic, since the main drive could not be unmounted while it was still in use. Apparently, it would be necessary to boot up with the gpart live boot disk and repartition from there. I used a utility called UNetbootin to put the ISO file on a USB stick, but when booting into the BIOS with F2, there was no option to boot from USB.

All I want to do is add some more disk space to my Ubuntu disk - is there a better way of doing this? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Windows 10 Hanging on start up

Linux Mint 18.1 Cinamon x64 host running Kernel 4.10.20. Trying to transfer a VirtualBox W10 VM into VMWare Workstation 12 Player. All exported and apparently imported correctly. However on start up in VMWare W10 sticks at "Getting devices ready 50%". The host has 8 virtual cores, one of which is permanently at 100%. The guest is set to use 2 cores.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Host Secure Boot with a linux host

With Secure Boot enabled in the host UEFI, how is it that installing vmware workstation on linux as the host, which changes the linux kernel, how is it that the modified linux kernel is still allowed to run? Doesn't Secure Boot mean that the kernel is signed and therefore fixed, with the signature in the UEFI firmware?
