Linux Host, Windows 10 Guest, Altium Designer "Directx 10 not supported" error

$

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on an Intel NUC8i7BEH, which has the "Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655" GPU.

According to Intel, this GPU hardware supports Direct3D 2015, 11.2, 11.1, 9, and 10, as well as OpenGL 4.5 .

I'm running VMWare workstation 15 Player, and a Windows 10 Home guest (10.0 build 17134).

I'm trying to run Altium Designer 18, which requires DirectX 10 for correct operation.

When I open a view in Altium that requires DirectX, I get an Altium "DirectX 10 is not supported" error dialog and I don't see the expected display.

I have "enable 3D acceleration" turned on in my settings; originally that didn't work so I changed my .vmx file (per several posts in the Forum) to include:

mks.enable3d = "TRUE"

mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = "TRUE"

mks.enableDX11Renderer = "FALSE"

mks.enableGLRenderer = "TRUE"

When I run dxdiag in my Windows guest, it says "DirectX Version: DirectX 12", "no problems found", "Direct3D Acceleration: Enabled".

What can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks!

Hi,

Running VMWare Player 15.0.2 on a Kubuntu 18.04 LTS 64Bit Linux host with a Windows 10 Pro 64Bit guest.

The Linux host is constantly freezing when the Windows 10 guest is running?

How do I solve the above issue?

Thanks!

Shared folders not appearing on guest VM

I just created a new VM, configured two shared folders, but I cannot find them on the guest.

I'm not really expert on VMs so it may be an error of configuration or something missing...

I'm using VMware Workstation 15 Player and on both host and guest is running Win 10 PRO.

Sharing folder is configured as "always enabled" and "Map as network drive in Windows guest" is flagged.

Any suggestion?

Win10 Guest vs Xbox One Controller (wired)

I'm running VMWare Player 15.0.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 host. My Win10 guest is generally running great, with VMWare Tools properly installed. In the settings for the guest I've set USB compatibility to 2.0 although I've also tried 1.1 and 3.0 (with reboots).

My Xbox One controller (wired) seems to be properly connected to the Win10 Guest. The 'Microsoft Controller' icon appears on the taskbar at the bottom of the VMWare guest window and I can connect/disconnect it (the icon blinks when connected, is that normal?). It appears properly in Device Manager within the guest:

devicemanager.png

Under Win Settings > Devices again it appears normally:

settingsdevices.png

Also please note that my USB headset works flawlessly in the guest.

My problem is that my apps can't seem to detect the controller. Steam reports 'no controllers detected' and when I try to run Xbox Accessories (from the Microsoft store) I get this:

I'm wondering if this is even a VMWare issue? Maybe it's just Windows acting up?

i7 VTT virtualization problem

Hello, i  recently upgraded from an old 2012 lenovo g780 to a new 2019 dell g3 notebook. the g3 notebook will not run any virtual machines that run XP if i have VTT enabled in the bios. When i turn off the VTT feature they work fine. Here's the problem; when i have it turned off, i cannot use my win7 x64 VM's with it off.

is there some sort of solution to leave VTT on in the bios; but make some tweaks to the problematic xp vm's config file?

I have tried vmware player 15.0.1 and also vmware workstation v 10.0.7

thanks in advance for the support on this real head scratcher

Change resolution of framebuffer/TTY

Hello,

I use arch linux. I use vmware workstation player 15. I installed the vmware tools. In a desktop environement resizing works however in the default terminal before opening desktop (tty for example) the window is too small,

Whether in vmware's display options I set a fixed resolution (like 3000X2000) or I choose to have same resolutions in my guest than my host (windows 10, I have a 3000x2000) doesn't change anything the resolution reported by hwinfo --framebuffer are between 400x300 and 1152x864 none of them being big enough. I follow the guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB/Tips_and_tricks set the framebuffer resolution and so i change the GRUB's config file GRUB_GFXMODE to the max resolution I of the hwinfo --framebuffer list I do the reload of the config with grub-mkconfig and reboot but still the framebuffer's size is never changin.

So my tty terminal is like 1/30 of my screen (incredibly annoying on a 3000x2000 13 inches screen) even tho once again resizing a desktop env when I launch XORG works.

VMWare Player 15 - Windows 7 unsolicited copy/paste to host

Hi,

I have what, for me, is a major problem but may be simple to fix.

I'm running Windows 7 in VMWare Player 15 on Ubuntu 18.04.1.

I have VMTools installed as well.

I can copy and paste from guest to host and vice versa.

The problem is that if I copy and paste something within Windows, the file is also pasted to Ubuntu just by moving my mouse over to the host (I have dual displays).

Almost like it's dragging and dropping but without me actually dragging it.

The file ends up in the drag and drop cache on the host (/home/username/.cache/vmware/drag_and_drop).

What makes the problem major for me is that while copying from guest to host works fine, copying from a network drive on the guest to host results in a BSOD.

That's something I can live with, but if I'm working in Windows and copying between network drive and local drive in Windows, if my mouse moves anywhere in the host I get a BSOD.

I've added "isolation.tools.dnd.disable = "TRUE"" to the vmx file; but it doesn't help.

That's the only isolation parameter I've added to the vmx file.

Device/Credential Guard Issue

Hi,

VMWare Workstation (Player)15.0.2 is wrongly detecting Device/Credential Guard under Windows 10 Pro here:

the Screeshot is of the error message and the relevant section of the group policy

I've run gpupdate to refresh the policy and rebooted. I also tried toggling the setting, but nothing works.

Any suggestions please? Is it possible to disable VMWare checking for this if it can't detect it correctly?

Thanks,

Roger

So I'm trying to play an old game on a Windows XP VM, but my VRAM shows up as 2MB, whilst it is set at 1GB. Can someone help?

Some specs:

OS (host) = Windows 10 Home 64-bit

CPU = Intel Core I3 2120 (3.30GHz)

RAM = 8GB

GPU = AMD Radeon R7 250

Samsung SSD

Screenshot attached.

I am using my optical drive to install from the disc. When I install the game, I can't play it because it crashes immediately.

The game I want to play is Donald Duck: Quack Attack

Thanks!

Bridged Networking Not Working on Windows 10 Host

$

Hello All,

This is the second discussion I'm posting regarding this issue as its still a problem after just updating VMWare Workstation Player to Version 14.1.5 build-10950780. And I never got any replies to my original post...

It appears that VMnet0 still is not working after the upgrade. When using the default network settings with the Virtual Network Editor, and selecting "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network" in the VM's settings, the virtual machine disconnects from the network and then reconnects. However, it stays connected using VMnet8 (*NAT). I can tell because its using the IP DHCP Pool addresses shown in Windows' ipconfig for vmnet8.

Also, running ipconfig /all in windows doesn't show that a VMnet0 actually exists. I assume you would normally see a VMnet0 adapter in ipconfig's output.

I can sort of workaround Bridged by using the Virtual Network Editor and setting VMnet8 as the Bridged adapter. However, when I do this I can only Manually select which Physical Adapter I want to use, i.e. Ethernet Adapter or Wi-Fi Adapter. And also, when doing this only the Ethernet Adapter option works, won't work when manually choosing the Wi-Fi adapter in the editor, the VM just never connects to the Wi-Fi.

Host: Windows 10 Pro (*10.0.16299 Build 16299)

Guest: Linux - OpenSuSE 11.4

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

VMWare bridge interfaces

$

I have a rather strange setup using VMWare:

1 - The hosting system is a Windows 10. It has access to NICs but all IP disabled. All WLAN authentications are done by this system, though.

In short, this system is capable of establishing network links but cannot communicate with the Internet (for security reasons).

2 - One of the virtualized systems is a Linux gateway. It manages an internel network, where all my other VMs connect, and acts as a gateway to the exterior NICS, which are virtualized in a single ethernet NIC.

Given this setup, each time I roam between networks I should run DHCP in my virtualized gateway to re-setup the exterior virtualized ethernet NIC.

However, this interface does not receive any indication that it was disconnected and reconnected upon roaming (which is natural, since it connects to a bridge).

Therefore DHCP does not run until the end of the lease.

Is there any mechanism on VMWare to disconnect and connect a virtual ethernet bridged NIC upon a change in the connection of the real NICs?

WinXP Guest using VMDK gets BSOD but Virtual Box runs it just fine!

I have a VMDK of a Windows XP Service Pack 3 - I created the image of the hard disk (Physical Box)  from an Acronis TIB and used StarConverter to create the VMDK file.

I have a HOST machine Windows 10x 64 Professional,
GUEST is Windows XP Service Pack 3.
VMWare Player 15.

I copied the original VMDK file to my VMWare folders and Created a new VMware virtual machine it BSOD'd.

I copied the original VMDK file into my Virtual Box [VBox version 6] Folder and created a virtual box using the VMDK it worked fine.

When I run the VMWare player version I get the BSOD. 07x basically the  bad driver complaint BSOD - since it works in VBox it can't be the VMDK drivers - it has to be a configuration of VMWare.

I have tried mounting this with IDE, SATA and SCSI selected as the hard disk interface but to no avail, I have limited the memory to 512MB, limited the Display , limited the processor .. So please provide some hints as to what the cause is. I am willing to share the VirtualBox vbox config file, and my vmx file so I can know what is wrong ..

My VMware ran one time - and that was after I cycled through the Drive Connection Types back to IDE - it then installed the VMware tools via download and crashes every time.

What things might be wrong after all if I have NO ISSUES with VBox - VMWare should handle this with no issues?

BTW: This text entry form keeps popping my typing current cursor position to the end of the previously line every minute or so - it is REALLY annoying!

Wireshark 3.0.0 (Npcap 0.99r9): Bridged Client VMs unable to connect to LAN!

Following the upgrade of Wireshark to V3.0.0 (which by default installs the "Newer" Npcap 0.99r9), I have had multiple Bridged Client VMs who have been unable to connect to my LAN.  Upon uninstalling Npcap 0.99r9 and re-installing to "Older" WinPcap 4.1.3 (now a separate download), these same Bridged Client VMs have been able to connect to my LAN!

I am wondering if any other VMPlayer Users have experienced the same issue, after having upgraded to Wireshark V3.0.0 (with the "Newer" Npcap 0.99r9)???

'Error While Powering On: The file specified is not a virtual disk'

The problem I'm suddenly having seems to be recapped to some extent in other questions/discussions. In any case, if this question with similar dimensions/parameters has already been resolved with sufficient clarity that I can fix the problem myself, kindly redirect me the extant discussion/resolution.

Having said that, the precise answer(s) to what the solution(s) might be seem relatively unique to each user/vm environment. If a forensic review could clarify whatever caused my particular problem, I would be happy to upload dump files, mem files, etc. from the relevant directory.

I'll go ahead and upload as much as I can here to get started on this.

The problem started this morning after the VM ('Zero') had been suspended yesterday and the host machine was shut down normally last night.

The problem I'm having is that my VM won't bootstrap from the .vmx file, which to my knowledge was not altered/corrupted, but may have been without my knowledge. The only AV program running (apart from Windows Defender) on the host machine is CCleaner--neither of which have caused any problems like this to date--this is the first/only time this has happened yet and I've been running this very same VM image of Windows 7 for 2-3 years quite stably. The VM image is called 'Zero' (will be evident from image appended of the VM directory in User/docs). All of the .vmdk files are present and accounted for (#'s 001-042)--no vmdk's missing. The .vmx/config file is still present.

I can say that ~ 2 weeks ago Microsoft pushed out a rather large 'update' for Windows 10, which runs as the sole OS (no dual boot) on the same physical hard drive that also runs Workstation and on which is stored all VM files relevant for the functioning of Zero. There were the usual product updates for Edge/IE, etc. (and maybe some other stuff wedged in there by MS), but there were no immediate concerns/problems discernable in the functioning of Workstation (I think I was running 12.x, no windows server and no pro version, just the freeware Workstation). This evening, I downloaded and installed v14 of workstation thinking that it might help to resolve the problem, but no dice. If I had to guess the .vmx got corrupted somehow, by the otherwise 'normal' functioning of some other process, hidden conventionally within windows or (I would give it less probability), the 'ordinary' functioning of CCleaner or Windows defender.

I'd take a guess that if I could assess/test and repair the .vmx file (assuming it has been corrupted), that would solve the problem. Incidentally, the .vmss file is ~ 200mg, too large for upload w/ conventional means.
Anyway, I'm really hoping to get some guidance/reflection from the users here in this forum--really any useful/helpful reflections/insight would be most appreciated. Thank-you in advance, I'm really in a pickle.

Revised 03/19: I have a hunch that the culprit here was the Microsoft Update 2-3 weeks ago--various/itinerant manifestations of strange/unexplainable behavior with the host OS since then--apparently unrelated but may not be correlated. Similar thing happened w/ host machine OS Office Outlook functioning; Outlook unable to load/interpret native.pst/.ost files in its extant file hierarchy w/some files being duplicated. I could try restoring the host OS back to pre-update state but my sense is that would not resolve the problem here. I can't get product support from VMware without buying 10 ore more licenses, although I could upgrade to Workstation v15 Pro if that would offer additional tools for resolving this.

Very bad Video play performance in VM

Hi All.

Playing videos in my VM is working really really bad.The video(s) (full hd) suffers from a lot of lag, and plays totally not fluent (same for VLC as WMP).

Despite quite some internet searching I wasn't able to fix this problem.

Disabling the 'Accelerate 3D Graphics' improves the video play but still quite a lot lag remains.

HOST

Windows 10 64bit - VMware Workstation 14 Player

Intel Core i7-7600U CPU @2.80GHz - 16GB geheugen - 1TB SSD

Display adapters: NVIDIA GeForce 920MX & Intel(R) HD Graphics 620

VM

Windows 7 64bit

2 vcores

Any ideas/thoughts how to fix this problem? in order to play videos fluently as is possible in my host.

Thanks in Advance!

Big problem with enahnced keyboard driver on Windows 7 host

$

After installing VMWare's enhanced keyboard driver on Windows 7 the host keyboard is no longer functional.

A workaround suggested in this post  does not work because when I click on the Properties key I am getting error "Error opening key - Access is denied".

When I run RegEdit as Administrator I observe same symptoms. Permissions for Properties fails to apply permissions with the same  "Access is denied"

Device Manager lists two failed HID devices of USB keyboard type corresponding to my keyboard and mouse (the latter has extra keys).

Device status says "its configuration in the registry is incomplete or damaged"

Rebooting with last known good configuration has not fixed the issue.

I suspect that uninstalling the VMWare's enhanced keyboard driver will not solve the broken registry problem.

How do I get my keyboard working?
