I'm new to VMware player and am trying to figure out what is the best way to access a virtual machine from a different computer?

Should I be using VMware software from my computer to access it to the remote VM?

or do I use some other type of remote desktop software to remote right into the Centos OS 7 virtual machine?

VMware Workstation Player ARP

Hi,

I have installed VMware WS Player and have two VMs configured: a Linux (Ubuntu) and a Windows Server.

On the host machine, by typing the arp -a command I can see the IP addresses of the guest machines with their virtual MAC addresses. However, on the other network devices (for example my firewall) I can see these IP addresses are mapped to the host's MAC address. Can you please let me know if this is the normal behaviour of Vmware WS Player or I can change it so all the devices in my network can learn the virtual MAC addresses of the guests instead of the host.

I did a lot of update and recofingure based on answers of askubuntu (it seemes aa raphic card issue, but nothing.

Of course 3D suppor is enabled in the config od VM.

Any hints?

Hi all,

I have the cisco virl CML 2.0, but I have problem during the installation:

"Please attach the reference platform image DVD/ISO file to the CML2 appliance.

If it is not present, then lauching network topologies will likely fail!

Please consult the installation documentation."

I have added the iso image file refplat_p-20..... in the vmware workstation.

In the virl  web gui is missing and and I can use default devices (switch, server etc.), but no other options from the iso image, like routers.

How can I add the iso file in the vmware?

I am using:

- CML-Personal 2.0

- on HP Elitebook 840 G6 - intel Core i5-8365U CPU @ 1.60GHz 1.90 GHz / RAM 8 GB

- with VMware-player-15.5.5

Many thanks for your help

Intermittent Chrome Browser issues in VMWare Plater 15.5.5

Having an Issue with chrome browser in Player 15.5.5. It is a little hard to explain so bear with me.

Issue 1 - I have lost the ability to click and drag any chrome tabs. How this usually works is that I can click and reposition the chrome tabs or I can click one and drag it over to my second screen which will then create a new chrome window. Now clicking and dragging does nothing, the tab just stays there unaware I am clicking and holding it. For some reason, at some point, it will then start working again until I restart the VM the next day.

Issue 2 - This one is harder to explain. I use Okta to manage users. Within Okta I can search for users by their names etc. Normally all I have to do it type in there name, press enter and Okta does a quick search and the name pops up. Now whenever i notice issue 1 is happening, pressing enter in Okta does nothing when I am trying to search, I can sit here all day pressing enter and the search will not initiate. BUT once I move my mouse out of the search box after pressing enter, the search will kick in and the users name will pop up like it is supposed to. This is also intermittent but is always present along with issue 1, and goes away when issue 1 goes away.

The Host machine has the same versions of software installed as the VM. I have never ran into this issue on the host machine

Hi when i try to start a Virtual machine it says this

Error while powering on: This host supports AMD-V, but AMD-V is disabled.

AMD-V might be disabled if it has been disabled in the BIOS/firmware settings or the host has not been power-cycled since changing this setting.

(1) Verify that the BIOS/firmware settings enable AMD-V.

(2) Power-cycle the host if this BIOS/firmware setting has been changed.

(3) Power-cycle the host if you have not done so since installing VMware Player.

(4) Update the host's BIOS/firmware to the latest version.

This host does not support "AMD RVI" hardware-assisted MMU virtualization.

Module 'CPUIDEarly' power on failed.

Laggy Ubuntu App Drawer

HOST: Windows 10 64-bit, 8GM RAM, Intel Core i5-8250U

GUEST: Ubuntu 20.04LTS 64-bit

Current Settings:

Installed VMware tools for Linux

RAM:                          3GB

CPU cores:                3 cores out of 8

3D acceleration:        ON

Graphic memory:       1GB

I have had this issue where app drawer is lagy and animation breaks down when opening the app drawer. I have tried tweaking every setting and run it at all possible combinations, and it never improves. But, this problem is persistent in Full-Screen mode and does not appear in 'Windowed mode' even when window is maximized. There are no noticeable animation break down in anything else.

Full-Screen mode changes the display resolution to 1920x1080(16:9) which is not an option in Ubuntu without the VMware tools, while windowed mode keeps it in 1920x325 or 800x600(4:3).

Also, when window size is changed (still not in Full-Screen mode), first few app-drawer opening animation is not so smooth but after that it works fine.

Any help would be appreciated!

Workstation Player 15.5.6 now available

Workstation Player 15.5.6 won't install on SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 15 SP1

I have just upgraded a workstation from SLED12 SP4 to SLED15 SP1 by doing a clean install in the / partition.

I am unable to get VMWare Player 15.5.6 to install correctly. On first run I get the message:

'Before you can run VMWare, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.'

This is normal behaviour I think. On clicking install though I get the error message:

'Unable to install all modules. See log /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-2270.log for details. (Exit code 1)'

I have the kernel-source and the kernel-devel installed and am now at a loss. I had no issues on SLED12 SP4. Can anyone advise?

How to enable Drag n Drop and Copy n Paste feature in Workstation?

$

I'm new to workstation and I wish to enable the above listed features. I went through the documents of VMware in which they said the options are under the Guest Isolation Option. There is no Guest Isolation option in my case. I've searched thoroughly. I was using workstation 12 before and have upgraded to workstation 15 to see if it makes some differences.

In the documents for Copy n Paste feature, they said VMware Tools must be installed. I am beginning to think if that is the reason. So I went to download VMware Tools. Now I'm confused.

There is a Disclosure Package of Workstation 15 and there disclosure package for VMware Tools 11. What is a Disclosure Package? What does it contain? And which one to actually download?

I mainly wish to enable those features at present. Somebody please guide me for this. I'll be grateful!

Can't install VMware Tools on Windows 2012 Server R2 guest

I've just installed Player 15 (fresh download from vmware.com) on a new Windows 10 x64 laptop.

I created a 2012 R2 guest with an ISO freshly downloaded from Microsoft.  VMware tools did not install.  Don't think it auto-mounted the Tools CD.

I tried Player > Manage > Install VMware tools but it's grayed out.

I mounted windows.iso from my VMware install directory and ran setup64.exe.  It says it can't verify KB2919355 is installed.  Windows Update says there are no more updates for this ISO image.

How can I install VMware Tools in this scenario!??

Workstation Player 15.5.6 breaks host audio on Windows 7

Not sure why or how but the update from Workstation Player 15.5.2 to 15.5.6 yesterday broke my Windows 7 host in weird ways.

* First noticed Firefox was not showing videos on websites

* Found Youtube was making Firefox hang

* Noticed system had no audio at all

* Winamp seemed to hang when opening the audio device

* Windows Mixer hung when changing settings

* Virtual machines had no video at all (nor audio)

* Ran System Restore to before VMWare update, issues went away

System is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, Dell Vostro 3350 (laptop)

Gonna stay on 15.5.2 for a while.

VM duplicate MAC Address issues when using Wi-Fi adapter

Greetings!

VMWare Workstation 15 Player 15.5.6 build-16341506 for Linux

Host OS: Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa

Guest OS: Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa

Host HW: Dell Inspiron 7472

Host Ethernet Network Adapter: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)

Host Wireless Network Adapter: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32)

I'm facing network issues with VMWare Player, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

When the VM is configured to use Bridged Network through the Wi-Fi adapter, it seems to duplicate the Host Wi-Fi Adapter MAC Address. As expected, it has been causing network drops in both Host and VM.

This issue does not happen when I use the built-in Gigabit ethernet adapter.

Here are the outputs of "ping" and  "arp -a" commands executed in the host, when Wi-Fi is in use. VM has the ip ending in 110, and the host, 106.

~ $ ping -c 2 192.168.1.110

PING 192.168.1.110 (192.168.1.110) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from 192.168.1.110: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.177 ms

--- 192.168.1.110 ping statistics ---

2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1002ms

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.177/1.540/2.903/1.363 ms

~ $ arp -a

? (192.168.1.110) em 74:40:bb:43:62:69 [ether] em wlp3s0

_gateway (192.168.1.1) em ec:08:6b:9f:97:e4 [ether] em wlp3s0

? (192.168.1.106) em 74:40:bb:43:62:69 [ether] em wlp3s0

. Again, here's the output of "ping" and "arp -a" commands after switching to ethernet. The MAC address shown is the same that is set in VMWare.

~ $ ping 192.168.1.110

PING 192.168.1.110 (192.168.1.110) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from 192.168.1.110: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.248 ms

^C

--- 192.168.1.110 ping statistics ---

~ $ arp -a

_gateway (192.168.1.1) em ec:08:6b:9f:97:e4 [ether] em enp2s0

For reference, here all the host MAC addresses

~ $ ip -br link

lo               UNKNOWN        00:00:00:00:00:00 <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP>

enp2s0           UP             54:bf:64:f7:05:28 <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP>

vmnet1           UNKNOWN        00:50:56:c0:00:01 <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP>

vmnet8           UNKNOWN        00:50:56:c0:00:08 <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP>

In tests with VirtualBox, this issue does not happen, and the VM network with the same Linux Mint behaves as expected.

I didn't find any clue in Google / DuckDuckGo searches..

Again, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Vmware Player Can not ping from host to guest or vice versa using Bridged Connection

I have installed new Fedora 32 workstation and Elementary OS (ubuntu 18) and in both cases I have selected Bridged connection. Host is windows 10. I can connect to internet and ping all machines on the network except host. I have recently updated to vmware player 15.5.6. I believe it is some kind of bug.

After I did a Kernel update VMware-Player had to do a reinstall and it didn't.

Thank someone for "Timeshift". I managed to roll back to working installation.

Then downloaded and tried the latest version of VmWare player ... no joy:

If that was true, why weren't warnings issued?

Workstation Player 15, VMWare Tools Install Error, Ubuntu Guest and Host

$

Context:

I'm relatively new to virtual machines, and need to use a pre-existing guest machine for a university project.  I received the guest machine via flash-drive.  OS' are Host - Ubuntu 16.04.5, Guest - Ubuntu 12.04.3.  I am using VMWare Workstation Player 15, which I downloaded from the site.  I have no other vmware products installed that I'm aware of.

I am trying to get vmware-tools working on the ubuntu guest.  I am currently unable create a shared folder (there is no error message, but no shared folder is appearing).  I am also unable to copy files from the guest to the host machine, although I can copy text onto the clip-board, and I can copy files from the host onto the guest.  From looking online, I believe the issue is vmware-tools not being installed properly.  When trying to update vmware-tools through the machine, I get an error message (below).

I also have two Windows installations of VMWare Workstation Player (one is 12, the other isn't on hand, but I think it's 14).  Both of these run copies of the same virtual machine.  I have no problems copy-pasting on either of them.

Error Message:

Error happens when using:

Toolbar -> Virtual Machine -> Update VMWare Tools.

First message is:

"Click Install to connect the VMware Tools installer CD to the virtual machine.  Mount the virtual CD drive in the guest, uncompress the installer, and then execute vmware-install.pl to install VMware Tools."

Click 'install'.  Then, error message reads:

"Unable to install VMware Tools. An error occurred while trying to access image file "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/linux.iso" needed to install VMware Tools: No such file or directory.  If your product shipped with the VMware Tools package, reinstall VMware Player, then try again to install the VMware Tools package in the virtual machine.

The VMware Tools image is inaccessible."

Other pages I've seen and things I've tried:

I've seen the following two pages here and here.  They talk about "ESXI" and "vsphere".  I haven't used either of these things, and I don't really know what they are, but it seems like a different situation.

Looking to the "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages" directory on my host, I have the following files, with no 'linux.iso' file.  On the guest machine, the directory "/usr/lib/vmware" doesn't exist (although I don't think that's an issue).

scr1.png

I tried searching for general help installing vmware tools, but I didn't find any fixes.  I tried following this guide, for manually installing vmware tools.  When attempting to 'mount' I get the following error:

scr2.png

Search results from that suggested my "drive wasn't connected to the VM".  Looking to my VM settings, have this in my CD-ROM settings:

scr3.png

The ISO image section originally had "/Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/isoimages/linux.iso" set, however "/Applications" doesn't exist.  I suspect it is there from a Windows host that this machine once ran on (again, I received a copy of this machine from a colleague some time ago).  I set the directory to "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/VirtualPrinter-Linux.iso", which didn't fix the error.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, I have no idea what I'm doing, and I've been trying to fix this for most of the day.  If anyone has any advice, or knows how to deal with this, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,

Joshua,
