a help file installed locally from a successful VMware player installation on a Windows 8.1 64-bit laptop. Not sure what the online URL is.
Wasted a lot of time on Step 1 : Player > Manage > Install VMwareTools... because of an omitted step 0 connecting CDROM to C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\linux.iso
Only then could I create the tar ball for the remaining steps.
Step 2. Logged in as root
Step 3. Ran mount command with no arguments; got /dev/sr0 on /media/cdrom0 ... as my mount point
Step 4. Not applicable; /media/cdrom0 mounted
Step 5. Changed directory to /tmp
Step 6. Not applicable, no previous subdirectory
Step 7. Listed directory of /media/cdrom0; noted VMwareTools-9.6.2-15888362.tar.gz
Step 8. invoked tar zxpf /media/cdrom0/VMwareTools-9.6.2-15888362.tar.gz
got gzip: stdin: input/output error
tar: Child returned as status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable exiting now.
What am I missing?
