How do I convert static disk to dynamic in Workstation 14 Player?

$

I'm trying to help someone convert their static disk to dynamic so it won't use as much space. He's using VMware Workstation 14 Player (free for non-commercial use). Hopefully this question fits in this forum. After some Googling I learned about vmware-vdiskmanager but I can't find it on the computer so it must not be included with this version of VMware. I can add a disk to an already existing VM and make the new disk dynamic. However, there's no option to create a dynamic disk (none I saw) when creating a VM so he has a disk in a VM he made that isn't dynamic but it needs to by dynamic to save space. How can I convert it from static to dynamic without vmware-vdiskmanager? Can vmware-vdiskmanager be downloaded and installed separately?

Keyboard not working in Windows 10 Pro as a vm in Player 14

I did a P2V with vCenter Converter of a Windows 10 Pro laptop to run it as virtual machine.

I booted this new vm in VMware Player 14 but the keyboard is not working while the mouse is ok. I could use the On-Screen keyboard to login but obviously I cannot work only with the On-Screen keyboard.

Does someone know of a fix to this problem?

Thanks,

Workstation Player Monitoring

Hi,

Am using vmware workstation player 14 which is installed on CentOS 7.x physical server.

I just want to know How can I monitor the VMware Workstation Player Services ? What are the parameters/services which I need to check for the VMware Player's application status?

If these services stopped then our monitoring tools need to be configured accordingly to pick alert.

Thanks in Advance.

bad disk performance - many io threads

I'm using workstation player free 14 on ubuntu 16.04.

Running a VM of windows 8 on a regular disk (not ssd). The disk performance seems really bad and at 100% with 14 seconds latencies.

When watching iotop it shows 10+ vmware-vm-thread that are doing io. My guess is that it's thrashing the disk. Is this normal behaviour?

Cannot connect the virtual device sata0:1

Cannot connect the virtual device sata0:1 because no corresponding device is available on the host.  The error pops up when I enable the host/guest share and map the drive.

I tried to delete and then add back the the sata drive to VM Player- but it did not help. I have installed VMware Tools.

And the enable/disable share functionality has got disbaled - I can not edit/undo it. (but the share is still enabled)

I am using VM Player 12.5.5 on Win10 Pro Host, and Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop.

Thanks

Weird. Only "VMnet0" will work as a VIrtual Network. Is this a bug or a feature? Trying to connect to VMnet 2, 3, 4, or even 5, dosen't work.

Waiting for connection

I am using VMWare Workstation 14 Player with Win2000 as the host system. It has been working fin for a long time until yesterday, when I ran it and am hung up on a screen saying "waiting for connection" with a dashed square above it. I changed nothing; it just started happening. I created a second virtual machine which works fine, but I need the files and programs off the first one, so I need to know either how to fix the problem or access the files. Thanks in advance for your help.

Unusable (grayed out) top menu in windowed mode

Hi,

I'm using Workstation Player 14.1.2 to run a Windows 7 guest over Debian linux host.

When in full screen, the top VMware bar appears, and is unusable - clicking on the (non-grayed-out) buttons does nothing; but that doesn't bother me too much, as I need the bar to be completely hidden in full screen mode, so I put  pref.vmplayer.fullscreen.nobar = "TRUE" - which works great, but then, when exiting full screen mode - the top menu bar (the textual menu) is completely grayed-out and unusable. If I omit the above configuration, the menu bar is fully functional when not in fell screen mode.

Any hints on what to do next?

Thanks!

Windows 10 guest produces crackling/stuttering audio on Ubuntu 18.04.

Windows 10 guest produces crackling/stuttering audio on Ubuntu 18.04. However, the crackling goes away when the Gnome Control Center is open to the sounds settings. As soon as I close the sound settings, the crackling comes back. Is this an issue with the virtual sound card using ALSA instead of pulse audio?

Problem Booting Win10 in VMWare Workstation for First Time

I purchased VMUG Advantage and am trying to create/load Win10 in VMWare Workstation. I can confirm I downloaded the full Vmware workstation .exe with the disc images (iso files) from VMUG's onthehub site and have a valid license.

After configuring my new VM for Win10 and attempting to boot, I get this message:

EFI Vmware Virtual SCSI Hard Drive (0.0) ... unsuccessful.

EFI Vmware Virtual SATA CDROM Drive (1.0) ... unsuccessful.

EFI Network ...

It is then followed up with a Boot Manager message; I've tried Enter Setup and tried both Configure boot options and Boot from a File. No success.

Can anyone provide insight or guidance on resolving this? Have I missed a step?

Thanks!

Ubuntu 18 host Workstation Player 14 Windows 7 guest crashing 8-8-2018

System:

HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF

Intel i7 4790

16 GB RAM

500 GB SSD

Nvidia p600

Workstation Player:

14.1.2 build-8497320

Host:

Xubuntu 18.04

2 GB swap

Guest:

Windows 7

2 core

4 GB RAM

125 GB

minimum recommended swap 2 GB

Run in RAM enabled through /etc/vmware/config

Disabled 3d acceleration

vtx enabled

bridged network

Problem:

guest lock ups, sometimes host lock ups when running Windows 7 update, shutdown and restart.

Host lock ups seemed to cease after setting Run in RAM.

Windows system restore generally recovers.
Windows perpetually tries to install certain updates on shut down.

Windows Update installs:

2017-12 security monthly quality rollup kb4054518: blue screen

2018-07 security rollup kb43440556: OK

office security updates 10 kb's: OK

2018-07 security rollup kb4338818: Blue screen after restart

office updates 6 kb's: OK

optional updates for win 7 5 kb's: OK

office updates 10 kb's: OK

.NET 4.7.2: OK

After installing successful updates:

retry 2017-12 kb-4518 through Windows update instead of Shutdown and install: Failed, reboot ok

retry 2018-07 kb-8818 through shutdown and install: Failed but no bsod

2018-07 preview of monthly quality rollup kb4338821: OK

retry 2017-12 kb-4518 through Windows update instead of Shutdown and install: OK

retry 2018-07 kb-8818 through Windows update instead of Shutdown and install: OK

Resolution:

Set Run in RAM to prevent host lock ups.

2017-12 security monthly quality rollup kb4054518 and 2018-07 security rollup kb43440556 have an issue causing bsod in Win 7 guest in vmware. I don't believe the issue exists in bare metal build, I just rebuilt a Win 7 pc with patches and didn't have any issues. The 2018-07 preview of monthly quality rollup kb4338821 installs correctly and presumably supercedes the failing updates allowing them to clear from the update queue.

Rechecking Windows Update and installing subsequent kb's: OK

Yes. I moved from VMware Player 14 to VMware Pro. I currently installed Windows 10 (32-BIT). The problem is that whenever I start up these VMs, the hard disk gets soo used that the VM lags soo much. Is there anyway to fix it?

I have an NVidia P40 card in an HP G10. P40 setup in shared direct mode. My VM has 8 CPU with 32GB RAM and the vGPU profiles Grid_p40-1b.  when we power on the VM it get stuck at 52% I have to kill the Host to get back the VM. I drop the memory to 24gb on the VM and the VM startup. Anyone has seen this problem or have a fix. why can the VM go pass 32gb?

thank you

VM Windows XP - with SVGA Treiber only a 640x480 resolution

$

Hello,

I have an old PC with Windows XP and I copied this into a VM (direct copy of USB hard disk) or converted via VMWareConverter.

When I start the VM, the resolution is at 1280x1024, even in safe mode. When I install the VMWareTools the resolution is only 640x480. If I uninstall the VMWareTools I can increase the resolution again.

On the Windows XP an VMWare server 2 runs. I can't uninstall it, it stops with an error message. A cleanup with the VMWare cleaner did not help.

Also, the resolution in the registry change brought nothing.

e.g. "Attach.RelativeX" or "DefaultSettings.XResolution"

I used VMWare Player 14.

For other Windows XP PCs, the conversion has always worked.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thank you in advance!

Holger
