Supsend not working the first time in VMWare Workstation 12.5.0 build-4352439

Ever since I upgraded to the latest version of VMWare Workstation, I have to select "suspend" twice to pause my virtual machine (Windows Server 2008).

I've also noticed after clicking suspend the first time, the IP of my virtual machine changes.  This is a real pain as I have to reboot the virtual machine to get the IP correct again.

Anyone experienced this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Lost audio from Linux guest on Windows 10 host after upgrading Windows 10 to 1803 - Stereo Mix workaround no longer working

$

The "Stereo Mix" workaround worked great on my Linux Mint 18.3 guest until I upgraded Windows 10 64 Pro to the spring creator 1803 update.  After that upgrade, I get an unspecified error message that is not resolved with the "Stereo Mix" enabled.  I've gone to my motherboard vendor's site (ASUS) and downloaded and installed the latest Realtek audio updates, to no avail.  Also deleted all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest Realtek drivers.  The funny thing is that a Windows 10 guest audio works great !!  Even without "Stereo Mix" enabled.

With the Linux guest, if I don't enable the "Stereo Mix" in the Windows 10 host, I get the usual "out of range" message from VM Ware Player.  However, when enabling "Stereo Mix" instead of the problem going away, I get a message that states an "unspecified" error has occurred.

It appears to me that the Realtek driver installation is not "taking" for some reason, and that Windows is installing the generic HDAUDIO driver.  It may be that the Realtek driver package from Asus (Maximus IX MB) needs to be updated to work with Windows 10 v 1803 ??  I submitted a ticket to Asus but they don't really understand the problem.

Anyone else have thoughts as to what may have happened?

Thanks in advance...

VMWare Workstation no audio through Focusrite Scarlett

I have:

  • Windows 10 Pro host (1803, build 17134.48)
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (first gen) over USB (2ch, 16 bit, 96 kHz)
  • VMWare Workstation 14 Player (14.1.2 build-8497320)
  • A Ubuntu Studio 16.04 64-bit guest

With this configuration, VMWare is unable to produce any audio. It gives me "The default sound device cannot be opened: Undefined external error. Sound will be disconnected."

I have no idea what to do in order to get sound to work. Removing the Scarlett from the chain is not an option.

Create a shared disk

I remember that many years ago, while using VMware Workstation 5 or something like, there was a way to create a disk to be shared between 2 VMs in order to play a simple cluster.

I remember that I had to edit something in the configuration files (maybe .vmx files) but I lose the ponter to the page describing the solution.

Is it still possible with WMware Player 14?

I know it is a solution only for testing purposes, but years ago it worket fine...

Cannot start VM: Error "Unable to connect to the MKS: Too many socket connect attempts; giving up"

I upgraded my Vmware Player installation to v14.1.2 on a 64bit Win7 Pro system.

After that I double clicked "as usual" on my Mint64.vmx file to start the Linux Mint VM.

Surprisingly this time Vmware player tells me an error:

"Unable to connect to the MKS: Too many socket connect attempts; giving up"

Whats wrong?

I am not using (on this computer) other products like vSphere or similar. Just Vmware Player

Since the VM itself worked successfully in the past the error must be in the v14.1.2 version of VmWare player.

How can I repair it?

mouse stops responding in workstation 14 player

I've been using vmware free workstation player without any issues for several years. Lately however the guest OS, ubuntu linux, stops responding to mouse clicks after the player has been running for a while. The vmware player responds - I can access all the player controls and use the power option to shut down or restart the guest, which is now what I do every time this happens. I'm running windows 10. Any ideas?

Hi,

Running current non-beta VMWare Workstation Player

on a Kubuntu 18.04 64Bit L.T.S. Linux host

with a genuine Windows 10 Pro 64Bit guest.

Have a SEVERE issue with VMWare Workstation Player:

When I shutdown or reboot the Win 10 guest

my Linux host freezes and I am forced to do a hard reset?

I've checked my desktop hardware and it's not that.

I've also checked the Win 10 guest on another desktop and the problem is there too.

I've been using this Win 10 guest for over a year without issues.

Any help would be appreciated as I use the Win 10 guest often...

Thanks!

Jesse

vMWare Player and Host hangs up with Host OS Windows Server 2016

Hello,

I have tested some virtual machine running with vmWare Player with a Windows Server 2016 as OS host. The problem I have is that, randomly, the virtual machine hangs up and the Host also stops. The screen is freeze, the keyboard and mouse move but without any action and I have no access using RDP to the Host. Also the clock in the desktop is freeze. After some random time (20-25 minutes) I can recover the control of the system and all goes normally until it hangs again some time after. Which could be the problem? I can not detect it. I am using vmware Player 14.0

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I have issue with running Vmware Player on Centos 7.5 (3.10.0-862.3.3.el7.x86_64).

I have installed this products:

Product Name         Product Version
==================== ====================
vmware-player        14.1.2.8497320
vmware-vix           1.17.0.6661328

But when I tried to run virtual machine, the last line in log file vmware-vmx-XXXX.log is:

2018-06-20T17:24:17.461+02:00| vmx| W115: Failed to load the KeyLocator cache from VMHS

I tried to Google that message, but there is no page thats contains that message. Do you know what to do with that?

Thanks!

SSH connections dropped due to QoS flags

$

I've started running into a problem with outbound SSH connections from a linux guest being dropped as soon as connection is established.  The issue is repeatable and fixable with a kludge that modifies QoS.

The issue manifests itself by dropping the connection immediately after establishing it:

$ ssh $host

packet_write_wait: Connection to $host port 22: Broken pipe

Enabling verbose flags (-v or -vvv) doesn't show anything remarkable.

I've been in contact with my linux distribution's maintainers[1] and they have helped narrow the problem down to an issue with vmnat misbehaving.

Because vmnat do not recognise AF21/CS1 DSCP flags, it'll send back a RST packet (don't know why) immediately upon received any packet having either flags, and finally break all ssh connection. (This happens soon after authentication since IPQoS applies during channel establish) [2]

This is on VMWare Workstation 12 Player, version 12.5.9 build-7535481, running on Win 7 Enterprise.  My guest is running a current Linux kernel (4.9.95) and openssh 7.7_p1-r4 (though it seems like any software that uses QoS will have this problem.)

Setting alternate QoS flags seems to work around the issue, e.g. ssh -o IPQoS=throughput ...

VMWare Player 12.5 crashing on Windows 10

$

Hi,

I had been running VMWare Workstation Player 12.5.0 on a Windows 7 host for nearly two years.

I recently had Windows 10 installed with VMWare Workstation Player 12.5.9 and started having issues.

Every once in a while (i.e. about once a day) VMWare Player would crash with the following error:

VMware Player unrecoverable error: (svga)

Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred.

A log file is available in "C:\Users\Username\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu 64-bit vtx\vmware.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware technical support, run "vm-support".

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

I also tried downgrading to 12.5.0 but the issue persists.

Any ideas what I could do/try about it?

I could not find vm-support.

Thank you!

Linux Guest - Win 10 Host - Bridged Network Not Working

$

Hello All,

I have a Linux VM that was created using the VMware Converter from P2V. The linux guest boots up just fine, and everything seems to be working except for Bridged networking. Even though I have bridged networking selected, it still appeared to be using the NAT setting anyway, given the IP Address the VM currently has.

I had noticed that there were no vmnet# adapters showing in the Win10 host. So I uninstalled VMware Player 14.1.1, then I downloaded the newest Player version 14.1.2 from vmware.com. After the install I am seeing 2 "new" network adapters in the Windows host. However, it still appears to have the same result.

I have Bridged Networking and Replicate Physical Network State enabled for the VM but the Virtual Machine is getting an IP Address from VMnet8, shown in the outputs below:

*I tried it without Replicate Physical network state as well, with same result...

Linux Guest shows:

Any ideas what could be happening here?

From the Linux guest, if I telnet to one of our switches, and then check who is connected to the switch via telnet, I can see the IP Address of my Win 10 host. So it appears to be using NAT, whether or not I've selected NAT or Bridged.

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

Ways to protect intellectual property of software running in a VM

$

Traditional way to distribute proxy/filter software is as an executable file. The security prompt by windows might scare some users and rightly so. Alternatively the same software could be distributed as a virtual appliance. And ported to linux so there are is no need for a windows license. Then its ability to harm the host system or get nosy with private data is greatly reduced so people should feel a little safer with it.

Next issue is how to prevent others from stealing the software or developing software that does the same thing. As the software is a proxy, its VM display can just be blank. How can it be made harder to see what the VM is doing and what its disk contains? Can the ram be encrypted or something? Can the VM be locked to host hardware much like windows activation works?

Hello;

I have Windows 10 host (build 17134.137) and Ubuntu 18.04 guest with VMWare tools installed.

After few hours of usage, images in the guest OS begin to appear corrupted and soon after that

the host OS freezes. My display adapter is NVidia P6000 (driver version 391.74).

What could cause this behavior?

thank you in advance!
