Restoring VMware Player.

$

Can I make a restorepoint Windows 10 and restore it after a crash?

Can I use EaseUS ToDo to make and reset an image?

This are 2 important questions for me. Once I had an error in my VMware

Player. I lost my inetrnet connection. So I had tot set back my old installation files of

Win10 x64. So I could repair my internet connection.

With a restorepoint or an image was it an easier way.

"Corrupt" VM

I have a problem with a Windows 7 x64 VM run on VmWare Player 14.

At first I thought it was due to a new system with a Ryzen CPU, but then I was unwillingly able to recreate the problem on a system where the same VM always worked. The problem is that if I put any program in the VM to fullscreen, the VM then refuses to restart once shutdown.

Here's what happens if I try to run the VM:

I start up VmWare Player, select the VM, hit play

VM starts, black screen with the popup "to direct input to this VM" etc etc.

VM hangs there.

Usually i would have resized the screen to 320x240 (I think) and shown the VmWare logo, but it doesn't even get there.

VmWare Player is responsive but it's not able to close, I need to kill the process. VM files on disk are locked and I need to reboot the host to get access to them. However, no matter how many temp files I deleted, I get the same error.

Now I'm stuck with this VM I can't apparently use anywhere. Is there a way to boot "repair" the VM or maybe boot Windows in safe mode through the VM, or any other solution to the problem?

Windows 10 1903 build 18362.388

VMWare Workstation 15.5 Player

It started occurring in the first build of 1903 when I was running Workstation 15 and after a number of Windows 10 updates and updating Workstation to 15.5, I am still seeing it.

As far as I can make out, SYSTEM is not permitted access to the relevant file. Is anybody else seeing it and any clues as to how it can be dealt with?

Thanks

VMWare Workstation Player 15.5 Hosted on Windows 2019 Server

I have a plain Jane Windows 2019 Server Basic with absolutely nothing added on.

When I try to run VMWare Workstation Player 15.5, 2 errors come up

VMware Player and Hyper-V are not compatible. Remove the Hyper-V role from the system before running VMware Player.

AND

Error while powering on: Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken.

Oddly enough I don't even have Hyper-V installed on my server. I've checked and even reinstalled Windows 2019 all over again

I have found this error pertaining to a VMWare Workstation Player hosted on a Windows 10 machine and not a Windows 2019 Server.

I have even tried implementing the Windows 10 fix to Windows 2019 to no avail.

Additionally, I have even tried executing the following command;

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Please help

Thanx

Steve

VMware WS 15.5 - USB device not connecting to the running virtual machine

$

Hi,

I have recently been forced to upgrade from VMware workstation player 12 to the latest version (15.5) due to the latest windows 10 update.

I have changed the setting so that USB devices should connect directly into the VM that is in the foreground, but this doesn't seem to work for my dongles.

I often have 6 VM's running at the same time and connect a dongle to each one. This worked fine on version 12 but now it's a complete ball ache trying to connect them all manually through Removeable Devices > Connect.

Is there any way for me to fix this or is it a bug? I don't get how it used to work fine 3 versions ago but not now.

The most annoying thing is, when I connect the 2nd/3rd/4th etc. dongle they connect to the first VM I opened so I have to go in and manually disconnect it from there and then connect it to the one I want it connected to.

Thanks

Jake

Torrent clients not connectable in virtual machines.

Hi I'm running Workstation 12 player on Windows 10 and I'm running both Ubuntu and Windows 10 virtual machines. The issue I'm having is that torrents download fine with qbittorrent and deluge but with both I get yellow/red connection signs and get a red check mark when testing the port in deluge. I do manage to upload as well but it's really poor performance compared to what I get on my original windows and I guess this connection issue might be causing it? I have tried changing ports and even using the same port on the original windows pc which has a green connection but nothing helps.

So what's the issue here? Does the traffic go through another port since they are on the virtual machines? What can I do to fix it?

How can I allow write permissions in shared folder?

I added a shared folder virtual machine - host. However I cannot save files in the shared folder from software like Word. I guess is a permissions rights problem because the message "There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost" is displayed in word.

I went to the folder in the virtual machine -> right click -> Properties and it has the Attribute "Read-only". I already unselected it and applied the changes. However it gets selected again automatically.

Does anyone have had this issue and knows how to solve it?

Shared Folders Setup

i'm running Workstation Player 15 in Linux with a Windows 7 guest. I have a shared folder on the host system set up and enabled. However, the guest cannot see it unless I also have a network connection. I prefer to work with the guest offline most of the time. Why do I need to have a network connection in order to see a shared folder on the host? Is there a way for guest to use shared folders on the host without the network connection?

VMGuard freeware application

I am having to entertain someone who will want to use an additional computer I have, so I am going to put them on a VM on that machine. I also need to protect my host computer from being accessed, so I wrote VMGuard for this purpose. I am using VMware-player-Windows-14 because I can't get the newer versions to open my VMs, so that was my test VM.

I am running VMWare Player 15 on a Windows 10 and have a guest Windows 95 machine on VMWare.  I would like to access a couple of DC2120 QIC-80 tapes through a Colorado 250MB is it possible to access the Colorado 250MB in the Windows 95 guest machine with the addition of a floppy drive in the hardware settings? If it is what would I have to do?

VMware Player just stopped working, when I close it says vm is busy

This is a real head scratcher. I have been using this vm for weeks. All day.

Today I installed a new router. So now I have a gateway device and a router. This should not matter.

I am using VMware-player-3.1.5-491717 on Windows XP host.

I have 4 vm's. It doesn't matter which one I touch with the mouse. Once I touch/click one of them, Player will put a lock

file in the vm's directory.Once it does, I cannot close the vm. It will say "The Virtual Machine is busy". If I start

vmWare Player, and then quit, that works.

It is just if I touch/click a vm, then Player cannot close except by task manager.

These are the contents of the lock files from 2 different vm's.

It doesn't create a vmware.log file, if I move the log files elsewhere.

I see nothing in the windows logs...

I uninstalled it, reinstalled it. Same thing is happening.

I need some help on this one.

Windows 7 Guest VM Low Performance

Hi,

I am trying to run a Windows 7 SP1 Machine on a VMware Workstation 15 Player running on my laptop. Laptop specs are:

Processor Intel i5-7300U 2.60GHz

RAM 8.00 GB

System 64Gbit

Virtual resources for the machines are:

Virtual CPUs 2

RAM: 4GB

Additional settings:

Intel VT-Xd enabled

Windows 7 performance are extremely slow, for example it takes, about 2 to 4 minutes to launch Powershell.

Is there anything I am missing so far ? Any suggestion ? Is there any additional information should I provide ?

Thank you in advance

I need to be able to customize my install otherwise RHEL 7 installs without GUI support. I tried to follow a video on youtube with suspending install and then deleting autoinstall setting in Virtual Machine settings, but , unlike on the video, it is greyed out.

Error when starting a newly created VM in Player 15.5 on Windows 10 Pro x64

I installed VM Player 15.5 on Windows 10 Pro x64 and created a new Windows XP VM. When I try to open the new VM, I get the following error:

Error while powering on: Failed to power on 'C:\Users\<current user\Documents\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Professional\Windows XP Professional.vmx'.

I also get the same error if I create a new VM without any guest OS i.e. choosing to install it later. So I know it is not specific to the VM OS image file I have.

My first thought it might be a conflict with Windows 10's Hyper-V, so I removed this as a feature, but I always get the exact same error.

Version mismatch with vmmon module: expecting 360.0, got 385.0.

I have downloaded the mkubecek vmware player 15.5.0 patches and put the vmmon.tar and vmnet.tar in the sources folder and started vmplayer 15.5 and it installs everything just fine and opens. but when I attempt to open a virtual machine I get this error. any ideas?

Guest Machines Do Not Show in VMPlayer Library

$

My vmware player does not show gest machines in the library. My troubleshooting suggests its a permissions error on whereever the library data is stored.

When I try to open a guest machine  the player does not show the  guest in the inventory pane of the  player. However I can run  vmplayer /path/to/machine.vmx and the machine  will open execute  properly.

When  I run vmware player as root (or even a regular user) it works   correctly - so it seems clearly tied to my user account. I have tried rm  -rf ~/.vmware and rerunning the player but I  get the same behavior.

The problem happens with all guest machines - so it does not appear to be related to anything about a machine itself.

Does anyone know where vmware player stores the inventory data? Nothing in the  ~/.vmware directory seems to be related to this, but the library data must be persisted somewhere. Where is this file?

I'm running vmware player 3.1.3 build-324285 on Ubuntu Linux  2.6.31-22-generic-pae Ubuntu 9.10.

Thanks for any help.

VMs communicating with devices that have APIPA addresses

$

We use virtual machines to run our automation software that we use to support production machinery. We have some machines that came into the facility with static IP addresses in the 169.254.200.* subnet, which is used by Windows to assign itself an address after DHCP fails.

Most of our machines have addresses in either the 192.168.0.* subnet or the 10.130.249.* subnet. For those machines, we can use the NAT adapter in the VM and connect with no difficulty. The ones in the 169.254.200.* subnet, however, won't route through the NAT adapter. Instead, we have to use a Bridged adapter. If we only had a few VMs, we could work around that, but we have 6 total host computers, each with 3-5 VMs. That's a lot of IP addresses to allocate in each subnet, and we don't have enough free for that.

Ideally, we would just move the machines from the APIPA range to the 192.168.0.* range, but the machine builder is unwilling to assist and can't provide us with a list of devices within each machine that would be affected. The risk to production is too great to experiment.

Is there a way to let the VM see the devices on the 169.254.200.* subnet through the NAT adapter? The host PC can see them fine and so can the VM through a bridged adapter.

We are running VMWare Workstation Player 12.5.2 build-4638234. The host and guest PCs are all running Windows 7 Professional SP1, 64-bit. We have a couple VMs on each PC that are running Windows XP for legacy software, but they don't need to see these machines.
