Workstation Player 14, keyboard characters not matching

$

I just upgraded laptops and installed the latest version of player, 14. When I moved my VM over and tried to use it the keys 0,P, semicolon and / are messed up. They are mapped to the - +  * \ keys instead.

Any idea what could be causing this?

It could be the new laptop, as it doesn't have a dedicated number pad, but that doesn't seem correct.

I am not an IT guy but have some experience, however this one I don't know.

I am thinking to try the enhanced keyboard driver.

Or should I just switch to version 12?

Update:

I tried installing Version 12 and its the same issue. So it has to be a keyboard interface issue with the laptop.

I updated the bios and issue resolved.

Is it possible to load vmware snapshot on vmware workstation player 12?

Trying To Connect VM To Internet But Cannot Tick 'Briged' And 'Connected'

$

I previously had problems downloading VMWare Player itself and somebody on this forum gave me the Linux Terminal commands to do that.

My problem now is actually getting my VM ( Windows 10 ) to connect to the internet.

My understanding is that Network Adapter settings have to be set correctly, specifically that 'Bridged' and 'Connected' must be ticked.

But when I tick them I get a window telling me there is an error and to look in vmware.log.

The first error message there ( near the very top says ) :

DictionaryLoad: Cannot open file "/usr/lib/vmware/settings": No such file or directory.

I can send the entire vmware.log file if you like.

networking Windows guest on a Linuxhost

Set up.

I am running Fedora 27 Workstation 64 bit (fully up to date) as my host.  This all works fine and has the network operating with a fixed IP address, for example 192.68.A.B

I have installed VMware 14 (latest version as of 20 April).  The install went smoothly with no issues.  I can open VMware and run it.

As my Guest I installed Windows 98SE (by way of an experiment)  This all went ok and the guest additions have been installed.  Everything seems to function but I can not access the local network.

My local network is set so each computer has a fixed IP  192.168.A.xxx, (subnet 255.255.55.0) The router acts as the DNS. All this seems to work fine.  I have two Linux machines and 1 Windows 7 machine, all hard wired to the LAN and a Laptop which just picks up an IP when it is connected via wireless.

I want o add the Windows 98Se machine to the network with a fixed IP address. So under Windows 98SE networking TCP/IP  and its assorted Network card I set the IP address of 192.168.A.C guest Sub net 255.255.255.0 put in the Gateway address 192.168.A.A and DNS address (gateway address) give the host name and workgroup name (workgroup name same as other windows machines workgroup name)

When Windows 98SE was installed as the guest the VM network was set as Bridged.

When I have windows 98SE running and click Network Neighbor hood I get the Entire Network icon only. Click on the Entire Network icon and I either get “can not browse the network” or “specific computer did not receive your request”.

In windows if I I issue the command ipconfig

I see;

0Ethernet adapter IP 0.0.0.0

                Subnet 0.0.0.0

1Ethernet adapter  IP 192.168.A.C

                       Subnet 255.255.255.0

                   Gateway 192.168.0.A.A

Do not want to try and connect to the internet with windows 98SE. If I go to one of the other machines on the network I can ping 192.168.A.B but I can not map the Windows 98SE drive on any of the machines in the network and neither does the Windows 98SE machine show up in any of the network neighbor hoods, The drive on the windows 98 machine is shared along with a specific folder.

HOST MACHINE LINUX Fedora 27

looking at the network setup I see network adapters for;

VMNET1 and VMNET8 only. Both are connected. I do not see VMNET0 which I understand is for Bridging.

I see vmware-netcfg in usr/lib/vmware/bin but I can not open the file to edit it as suggested in some forums on the web. The to get VMNET0 added to the list of network adapters. I have tried using X and Wayland.

So far this long winded explanation can any one tell me the following;

1. How to get the computers to show up in the guest’s Network Neighbor hood?

2. How to be able to get to map the guest on the other computers in the network at require this. I know how the syntax to map a drive but at present the guest is not showing up on the computer I want o map it drive to. (but as I indicated above I can ping it). I have tried using the Windows 98SE assigned IP address and the computer name etc.

3. How to get vmware-netcfg to open so VMNET0 can be added and any other changes made

4 Alternatively how to add VMNET0 to the adapters.

I have not tried NAT as I am not sure how to set this up with a fixed IP address on the local network 192.168.A.xxx and again make sure the computers show up in the Network neighbor hood on the Windows 98SE machine ans the other Windows computers on the network.

YesI know Windows 98SE is old but I do have a specific reason for getting this networking to work

Can any one assist please.

Thanks

I'm using Workstation 14 and to my amazement have succeeded in converting my Physical machine to Virtual.  However I've a major problem because whn  I pwer on this Virtual M/C, the mouse pointer is frozen the virtual screen so that it is impossible to log on end install Tools - please see attached screenshot for offending screen. Control/Alt releases pointer from the Virtual screen but whenever I return to Virtual - frozen again.

I am fairly new to VMWare and would be very grateful for any help forthcoming - willing to supply Teamviewer Creds if helpful. email aglaw@aglaw.plus.com

VMware® Workstation 14 Player black screen

Hello,

I have installed VMware® Workstation 14 Player on Windows 10 Pro.

Created Virtual Machine with Windows_7_Pro_64 OS. Instillation was successful.

But after restarting the Virtual Machine the screen completely black.

Refer the attached image.

Solution tired:

1. Disable/Enable "Accelerated 3D  Graphics" ----> Issue still there, black screen.

2. Checked the VMlog, got the below message

vmx| I125: FILE: FileCreateDirectoryRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (C:\ProgramData\VMware): Cannot create a file when that file already exists (183)

VMware Tools installation problem

$

I'm trying VMware for the first time, and impressed about the ease of installation and how well it works!! ... EXCEPT I haven't been able to install VMware Tools (and a few other small issues, most of which VMware Tools might solve).

On a Ubuntu 16.04 OS, I've installed VMware Workstation 14 Player (downloaded within just the last few days), and then a Windows 8.1 virtual machine (from an old computer with a hardware problem about to be discarded, using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client), and I remember seeing a notice of VMtools apparently downloading automatically (to where, I don't know...), but on the toolbar at the top, under Virtual Machine, the option to "Install VMware Tools..." is dimmed and cannot be launched by clicking on it.  I've been using this computer for a day already to test to see what works and what might not, but this problem with VMware Tools has not been resolved despite spending a lot of time researching it and trying to find a solution.

When the virtual machine starts, a message pops up saying "Install the VMware Tools package inside this virtual machine. After the guest operating system starts,

select VM > Install VMware Tools ... and follow the instructions."

(Notably, I would suggest rewriting that last phrase to something like

"from the toolbar, select Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools..."

as it's not clear what is meant by "select VM".)

I am logged in as an Administrator account on both the underlying Ubuntu OS and also within Windows 8.1 in the virtual machine.  The internet works (and I'm posting this message from within this virtual machine).  I have rebooted the entire computer several times, by proper shut downs of both the virtual guest computer and the host operating system, hoping that would help, as I read somewhere that rebooting the entire system might help with VMware Tools, but it made no difference with this system.

I have read that VMware Tools cannot be installed manually but must be installed by VMware, and in another place I read that it automatically loads as an ISO onto a virtual DVD but I have no virtual DVD showing up in my virtual machine.  I figure that it should be just clickable from the toolbar ... and it shows up there, but it is shaded out and not clickable.

Any ideas regarding why "Install VMware Tools..." is presented on the menu but is not clickable, or any ideas of a solution?

I am trying the free home version of Player thus far, to first see whether or not this will work completely.  Is VMware Tools only available after purchase of a license key?

(Moving an OS from old hardware to new hardware might best be done by Converter and Player, to keep all your configuration settings and *entire* setup turnkey, so I'm hoping this will work well enough to adopt as a solution, versus moving the OS and everything as the sole OS to boot up successfully on the new hardware with all the necessary drivers and technical steps trying to avoid the potential blue screen of death.  Also, running Linux and Windows concurrently and being able to switch between them for the best of both worlds may be better than booting separately at different times.  Hoping Workstation Player or Pro works well enough to be the best overall solution, all considered...)

USB network adapter intermittently fails after attaching to VMware [Windows 7]

$

I have two USB wireless network adapters -- NetGear WG111v3 and TP-Link TL-WN725N -- that I often attach (one at a time) to a VM.  The NetGear works flawlessly.  The TP-Link will sometimes work but other times it generates an error and becomes unusable -- even by the host OS.  The only remedy I have found is to un-plug / re-plug it.

I am using VMware Workstation 12 Player, version 12.5.0 build-4352439.  Both the host and guest OS are Windows 7, 64 bit.  The TP-Link is hardware version 2.

When the TP-Link fails, it no longer shows up in the host OS Device Manager.  On vague advice from Stack Overflow, I have disabled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the TP-Link USB Adapter Properties.  This had no effect.  I have contacted TP-Link and they have apparently reproduced the issue but are directing me to vmware.  So: is this something I can fix or work around with vmware settings?

Thanks,

-Steve

How can I get the VIX API ? I need it for GNS3.

Hi,

I am installing GNS3, the network emulator, which requires VIX API to operate.

The installer stopped with an error message stating :

"VMware vmrun tool could not be found, VMware or the VIX API (required for VMware player) is probably not installed. You can download it from https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vix-api/. After installation you need to restart GNS3."

But on that page I only found release note and documentation, no software to download.

can anyone help me find it ?

VMware 14.1 Video performence in VMs suddenly slows no recovery short of reboot.

$

Hello All;

I have a system with VMware 14.1 running under Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS, I have multiple VM operating systems running on it (Various Windows version up to 10, a couple Ubuntus), it is a powerful box with no reason at all to believe I have a hardware limitation so please lets stay away from the "Your hardware can't keep up, go buy a new video card suggestions".

The situation is the VMs will play back video just fine for some period of time and then maybe one VM will start playing videos slow like a half speed, not a jumping choppy half speed but rather a steady consistent half speed.  (Not a hardware unable to perform situation) Sometimes if it is one VM a sysple shut down of that VM is enough to bring back performance..for a while.  Once the situation starts it is downhill  over the next few days all the VMs will start to play slow. (Yes for a while it is possible to have slow and fast VMs) Once they are all slow even a full shut down of VMware will not clear the problem.  The only know cure is a full power down to cold and reboot.

It matters not which format or source of video, it can be local or Web based.

Even when the VMs are all playing video slow the host is unchanged.

Zotac GeForce GT 710 2GB Low Profile Video Card (THis is not a gaming system so the card manages very well)

Latest drivers.

i7-6850K

X99 chipset (Gigabyte GA-X99 Designare)

128GB DDR4  (Yeah it might seem a bit  much but circuit simulations can always use more.....)

1TB SSD for host OS

16  TB raid 1 0 for VMs.

Hoping for the magic bullet suggestion.

Thanks

Nick

Ubuntu 18 guest hangs

Sometimes after some usage my Ubuntu 18 guest VM hangs.

In the guest I receive the following errors in the syslog multiple times:

May 19 17:11:57 ubuntu kernel: [ 7700.935992] [drm:vmw_cmdbuf_work_func [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Command "SVGA_3D_CMD_DX_DESTROY_SHADERRESOURCE_VIEW" causing device error.

May 19 17:11:57 ubuntu kernel: [ 7700.936000] [drm:vmw_cmdbuf_work_func [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Command size is 12

I'm currently using VMware Workstation 12 Player on Windows 7 Pro. The graphics drivers on my host are up to date as far as I know.

The Workstation Player freezes periodically on Linux host with the kernel 4.15.* and later.

Hi,

I have problem with the Player since I installed the kernel 4.15 on my host.

Host: Notebook Samsung RV511, Fedora 28 x64 (earlier 27), kernel 4.15, 4.16, 4.17

Player: VMware-Player-14.1.1-7528167.x86_64.bundle

Guest: Fedora 27 , Windows 7

Problem:

When I start the guest, I can work well only few minutes.

Then the guest hangs for about 10-20 seconds, then the guest become responsive only for 1-5 seconds and again freezes

An again, and again….

It is well visible when I try to move a window with a mouse – window is moving only inch or two and then the guest freezes.

This started after I installed kernel 4.15 in January 2018 on my host.

Now, on kernel 4.17 the error still exists.

I have to use old kernel 4.14.18 no my host – the guest works perfectly for that kernel.

The problem also exists on a Debian host with kernel 4.15, and Linux and Windows guests.

Anybody can help?

VMWare Player version 14.1.2 is unable to install the VMWare tools in the Windows 8.1 VM instance on an openSuse Leap 15 host. It just says it is unable to install the update to the guest tools into the system after entering the root password and clicking to proceed. The guest OS comes up but I have no idea how stable it might be with mismatched tools in the guest OS.
